Tech transfer offices play a central role in the biotech ecosystem as most of the founding IP of biotech companies emanates out of universities. The activities of tech transfer offices come in various flavours. Some remain rather passive and mainly file for IP and negotiate licensing agreements. Others play much more active roles, with translational funds, commercialization grants, business development, translational professionals and alike to actively maturate and further de-risk university discoveries.
One of the latter is SATT Conectus, which is responsible for tech transfer of all the players in public research in Alsace. Mr. Nicolas Carboni is Chairman and CEO of Conectus Alsace inc., one of the leading Technology Transfer Offices in France. Created in the framework on “Investing for the Future” program in January 2012, Conectus Alsace has secured over 36M€ to invest in intellectual property and “proof of concept” programs.
Today, with a team of 35 professionals and a turnover of 12M€ / year, Conectus manages all IP & technology transfer activities for all public research laboratories in Alsace (Université de Strasbourg, Université de Haute Alsace, INSA Strasbourg, ENGEES, INSERM, CNRS). Conectus has invested 20M€, transferred over 70 technologies, and created 15 start-ups which have raised 28M€ in the past 24 months. Beyond this investment and licensing activity, Conectus Alsace develops and manages collaborative research projects between private companies and Alsatian public research laboratories, representing over 45M€ of contracts signed.
In July 2014, Nicolas has been elected Chairman of Réseau C.U.R.I.E., the French national association of technology transfer professionals, federating over 180 Public Research Organizations in France and over 1300 individual members.
Prior to joining Conectus Alsace inc., Nicolas Carboni was Chief Executive Officer of Alsace Biovalley – one of the top three competitiveness clusters in Life Science and Health in France ‐ leading the development of the life science sector in the Alsace Region. Alsace Biovalley was also the coordinator of the tri‐national Life Science cluster Biovalley – one of the oldest bioclusters in Europe ‐ spanning from Basel to Fribourg and Strasbourg.
Before moving to Alsace, Nicolas has lived 13 years in Canada, 11 of which working at the interface of public research and science ‐ both from the public and private side – focussing on spin‐off creation, technology transfer, and R&D management. During that period, he has worked for the National Research Council of Canada, Universities, investors, the Government of Quebec, as well as large industrial groups such as Suez Environment, Hydro-Québec or Bombardier.
In 1996, he was co‐founder of Bio Artificial Gel Technologies (510k in 2007), one of the first spin-offs from Université du Québec à Montréal. In 2004, he was appointed Director of “Centre d’Analyses et de Recherche” (over 180 employees), affiliate of the Université Louis Pasteur. He is currently Board member of Anagenesis, a leading biotech developing innovating cell therapies, as well as Board member and Vice President of a pre-clinical service provider to pharma industries.
Nicolas has been sitting 5 years on the national jury of the national competition for start up creation, organized by the Ministry for Higher Education and Research and OSEO. He was also a member of two working groups for the definition of the National Strategy for Research and Innovation, launched in 2009 by President Nicolas Sarkozy.
He is regularly guest speaker for numerous conferences, both in France and abroad.
Mr. Nicolas Carboni has a background in Law, Business Administration and Engineering obtained both in France and in Canada.
